How do you know it has a cracked cylinder? What is the mileage or other indications that the engine needs replacing? May just be a bad valve or broken-stuck ring. As of now, VW does not have any engines available,(checked 2 weeks ago). This leaves local repair or rebuild from some where. If buying a rebuild, ask if the case is getting a line-bore. Is the cam getting replaced, etc. New heads? What is being offered? There is a large range of what is considered a rebuild.

Good Luck, Dennis

Have an 88 Wolfsberg GL with a cracked cylinder...compression test showed 35% on number 4. Need to replace engine and am getting conflicting reports on whether to use a VW rebuild or an independent rebuild. Have heard lots of recent nightmare stories about independent builders and installers pointing fingers at each other and am wondering whether it's worth it to have the local VW dealer order one from VW and have it installed by their service dept.
