I agree that these remarks are crap. Any oil today is better than just 5 years ago. Using the proper application and a little care, modern engines simply do not wear out anymore. The parts fatigue from pounding or fail catastrophically. Usually due to failure of the lubrication or cooling system, but not simple wear. I have yet to see piston rings wear out that were not stuck due to carbon or seized due to overheating/melting. Synthetics eliminate the carbon-varnish problem. The improved viscosity index allows for thinner oils and still provide protection at higher temps. I've have used Mobil 1 for years. I have yet to do engine work except for heads and I have run some engines over 300K.

So far everything you're mechanic said is pure crap. Synthetics were developed to handle applications of very high temperature. I'm not going to try and give you everything thats in Motor Oil 101 but if your mechanics lips seized that would be OK.
