I would somewhat disagree.  The Muir book is primarily aimed at aircooled
VW's and has little about the Vanagon body. While it is an exceptional book
and a "must read" for owners of aircooled VW's (including aircooled
Vanagons) I think it is of less value for watercooled Vanagon owners.

And the Bentley, while by far the most complete manual, is written for
professional mechanics, not backyard mechanics. It is a neccessary book to
own because of its depth of coverage but can be a bit overwhelming for some
inexperienced mechanics.

This leaves two books, the Haynes manual and the Pocket Mechanic manual,
both of which are written for backyard mechanics and explain things in
simpler terms (but neither of which is as exhaustive in coverage as the
Bentley).  Optimally you should get at least one of these plus the Bentley
and you'll be ready for just about anything.

Both of those books, the Haynes manual for watercooled Vanagons and the
Pocket Mechanic manual, are British printings not sold in the U.S. - except
by us, as we import them ourselves. You will find all of these on the
