I have a VHF unit for my DoKa - I am a armature radio operator and with a few radio tweaks you can go out of the ham bands and do the commercial stuff - VHF in this neck of the woods is a lot more practical - my radio was about 150 CAD second hand - good new mobile VHF radios are about 350 or so (Icom 2100) - mine is programmed for the police, ambulance, highway department - I can use it as a scanner if I like - the best part is, I could talk to the police, ambulance etc if I really wanted to - say if there was a life and death accident or something - yes that would be illegal, but if I save a life, you can take my radio please.
