Hi Kevin, The water cooled heads just don't have the peak thermal surges that air cooled do. Consequently exhaust valve burning and loose seats don't happen. I have an '86 Syncro with a 4 digital gauge panel, two of which monitor coolant and engine oil temp. I also installed a 3rd coolant sensor that reports the temperature of the coolant returning from the radiator over a simple toggle switch. This arrangement allows me to see the engine operating temp and how "thermally loaded" the cooling system is. Someone else on the list promotes a clever method of monitoring cooling system pressure(or catastropic pressure loss). Forget about cyl head temp on a WBX, look for fluid temps and/or pressure loss!
