The problem isn't in having switched front and rear tables (I tried that to fix problem), believe it or not the Westy engineers simply screwed up! The cutting the door off shorter certainly is an intelligent fix (lifting off the hinges certainly works if you are vastly more patient than I am). It is a problem with the early Vanagon Westies (air-cooled through '86, I think). Finally in '87 they apparently got the message and simply made the door shorter to start with.
