Bidding on your own auction isn't that uncommon - they do that here in the cattle / beef industry all the time. If you are the highest bidder you pay the auction fees no matter what - the auction house doesn't care as they make their money no matter what.

I find that people are (and I have been know to be guilty of) bidding with emotions more than brains. If there is an item there that you want, bid your maximum - your real maximum, if you are outbid - walk away from it and let some other fool buy it for too much money - don't let that fool be you!
