I received this e-mail today and wanted to comment on it. I am the
owner that is selling this Vanagon on Ebay and I wasn't aware of this
situation on Carfax until today. I have since done a great deal of
research to find out why we're getting this discrepancy. In talking
with the friendly folks at the Utah State Motor Vehicle Division - they
told me that one, they upgraded their computer system last April and I
remember when I went to do the renewal at the end of July, they were
still trying to work out the bugs. The second comment that they told me
is that if a vehicle is over ten years old, they do not track the mileage
on vehicles any more. Just because Carfax says, "NOT ACTUAL MILEAGE
TITLE ISSUED," doesn't mean there is a problem with the mileage/odometer
readings, even when the mileage is correct. Apparently, the new system
they put in makes older vehicles a "NOT ACTUAL MILEAGE TITLE ISSUED"
statement. I have a 1993 Honda Goldwing GL1500 motorcycle that I
purchased last year and it does say on it "Actual Mileage Title," but
they were not doing this on earlier vehicles. I also own a '89 Vanagon 7
passenger bus and we purchased it with a broken odometer. This title
does say, "NOT ACTUAL READING - WARNING ODOMETER DISCREPANCY." The title
on my '85 Vanagon Westfalia Camperbus has no warning like this on the
title - but also does not say, "ACTUAL MILEAGE TITLE" on it - so their
computer sees that as a "NOT ACTUAL MILEAGE TITLE ISSUED." I also have a
number of inspection certificates that have the mileage written on them
and there is no indication that mileage spinning or problems with the
odometer reading are there. I will be more then happy to e-mail copies
of all of these to anyone if they so like. I also noted that Carfax is
showing another discrepancy on the mileage when my Dad registered it in
Texas. According the Carfax, my dad registered this vehicle on
12/17/1985 - with a mileage of 32,000 miles. First off, it is hard to
believe that a Vanagon that was purchased in Germany, from the factory in
1985, driven in Germany for about one month before it was shipped to the
states, then had all the US spec items installed in the US, and then
registered in December would have 32,000 miles on it. I have the
original copy of the registration paperwork from Texas and the mileage
that this says on it is 003194 miles. Somewhere down the road, someone
has made a mistake, whether it was inputting this into the computer, or
someone is reading this wrong. Sorry that I seem to be defending my
Vanagon, but since my dad was the original owner and it is in such good
shape, why would I consider changing anything, especially the Odometer.
Unfortunately, Carfax is not interested in changing any of the details as
mentioned above because they are just getting the information from a
number of sources. This could be a problem from the very beginning and
it is Carfax's policy to not make any changes - try to see if you can
change your Social Security Number with the IRS after they have made a
mistake - takes almost an act of Congress. So if there is anyone who
finds this report disturbing or needs some more information, feel free to
ask. I can guarantee that there isn't a problem here and hope this
helps clear up the water.
