A second bit of wisdom, confirming Matthew Pollard's assertion. The VW owner's manual on all of the water cooled VWs in the 1980's and 1990's (to my knowledge) had text that read (something like):

"The water temperature gauge indicates when the motor has reached operating temperature. The needle may move throughout its range of movement during operation of the vehicle, moving very high during extreme temperatures and when hauling heavy loads. This is no cause for concern unless the needle exceeds the range of the gauge or the RED LED is flashing..." then it goes on to tell you what to do if the LED flashes, etc.

My Jetta TD is often rock steady with the needle over the LED, but if I have the AC on, and have been doing 75, and come off the highway, and it is 95 degrees out, that needle shoots to the upper limit for a few minutes. If I'm climbing hills with fat friends in the car, or if I'm hauling railroad ties and anvils in the trunk, same thing. No worries.

I'm at almost 235k miles on the I4 1.6l TD original motor; it has never failed me yet.

phil, i maintain that you are in the temp range that is normal for these things- well, at least for 5 or 6 of us. I would drive it and keep an eye on the fluid level. matthew 86 syncro westy tiico
