I wouldn't be so quick to blame the air flow meter, although it is definately one possibility. Other possibilities that come to mind include a bad temp sensor, or even just a bad connection somewhere. I'm sure others can provide some suggestions/ideas. The Bentley manual has the info you would need to troubleshoot the FI system, and there are also resources online.

But to answer your second question, no, the one you found will not work. It is for a 2.1L watercooled van (and, incidentally, I sell it much cheaper than Go Westy, $119 versus their $200.) Assuming that your van is a 1980 (which I think is what you meant to write), you have a 2.0 liter aircooled engine; that AFM will be $149.95 if it turns out to be what you need.
