The coefficient of friction in a bearing lubed with oily dust is much lower than that of dry dust....

Cheers, Mark

A couple also thought that light weight oil would be a better choice for a lube, which I also agree with -- less flammable, better lubricating properties. I might try it.

The idea here is that by introducing a lubricant on the "business end" of the motor (as opposed to the "squirrel cage" end -- excuse use of excessive technical jargon) the lube will work itself into the bearing. Maybe this is fantasy, results are not in yet. The plan is to use very little lubricant, and use it occassionally. I'm not planning on making the thing swim in a sea of the stuff.

There is also the possibility that the lubricant will make any dust that finds its way into the housing adhere to the motor, and actually shorten the working life of the motor. I just don't know yet.
