Subject: Rebuild Question
Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1"

Wolfy (my 85 Westy) finally gave up the ghost this past weekend. After turning 169k miles coming back from the Ozarks, he got us home in fine shape, but I came out Monday morning to discover he had dumped a load of coolant on the driveway.

Since I have no place to work on this guy (no level driveway, and he won't fit into my garage), I am forced to seek outside professional help in getting him back on his feet. I checked first with Volkswerks, who has given me good service in the past, and they estimated $2,000 for new heads. I then talked to Vee Village folks who said they would do the heads for $1,700 to $2,000, but for $3,000, they would rebuild the entire engine, which is what their mechanic recommended for an engine with 169k miles.

I had several long trips planned for this summer and fall.... What do you think, ladies and gents... Should I do the rebuild? Does the price seem right?

Thanks for your advice.
