I think you are correct and that is why those who say they have plenty of room to open the closet are probably referring to the smaller table being there (even if they don't think so). I have owned an 89 and now an 86 and the closet clearance for the rear table was the same in both. The easiest thing to do would be to swap tables (as may have been done in advance for some folks) or to simply keep the rear table out of the way (I keep mine stuck in between the upper bunk pads since we rarely use this bed and the closet is accessed much more than both tables.
