John and Mike, I'm 6'9", 235, and driving a 90 Syncro Westy. I fit OK but some extra leg room would be nice, especially on long trips, . I have power steering and bought one of the smaller Golf steering wheels and tried it. I liked the extra room between the wheel and the door (this might be nice for the larger of girth also), but from my height the top of the wheel blocks some of my view of the speedo and tach. Also the Golf wheel is not a "bolt-on" replacement, some grinding or other modifications of the steering column are required to allow the wheel to sit low enough on the column shaft to cancel the turn signals correctly. There was a post some time ago about how to do this. I think there is a link to this proceedure on BenT's site (vanagoncafe.com.) but, I haven't yet figured it out, so I went back to the stock steering wheel for now. John, are the tabs you are talking about in the front of the seat rails or the back. I would like to try this, although, I also have the problem that I lean the seat back a bit in order to get a bit extra headroom and the back hits the sink first. If the seat bottom goes back farther, I'll have to sit more upright and figure out how to get some more headroom too. Warren C. |
