I think it was Gary Stearns that posted a few messages outlining his experiences with vibrations and some solutions. Engine mounts, resonant chambers, added weights, alternator mounts were some of the areas covered.

The size and kind of muffler, and the method of exhaust attachment/joints/flex joints also have an effect on the 3k-3.5k buzz.

David Marshall posited that the exhaust system was the main culprit. His test was the application of a human foot to the tail pipe or muffler and pushing down (reasonably) as an assistant revs the engine. He claimed that if this dampened the resonances, then the suspension of the muffler et al was to blame.

My opinion is that the exhaust system certainly plays a big part, but also the engine and transmission mounts are the problem. Frank Grunthaler and myself were discussing this last spring/summer. He is way ahead with developing a better engine mount.
