Greetings Vanagonites:

I have been working feverishly during the past two weeks to ready my 87 Westy for The Big Summer Trip (actually taking place from May to July). Soon I'll post everything I've done, and I know you can't wait to read about it. For now I'm still trying to get the grease out of my hair and my fingernails clean.

I'm writing for recommendations along the way: good mechanics, out-of-the-way places to see, events to attend, etc. If you know of any don't-miss places along my route (below) drop me a line. And if you're starved for Vanagon chat and wouldn't mind a visit from a fellow traveler, let me know too. Be warned: I don't travel light -- two kids, one wife, and one small dog.

The plan is to motor from my home in Fort Lauderdale up the east coast of Florida, Georgia, the Carolinas, Virginia, etc. all the way to Maine. There we will take a left and head west through Quebec and Ontario then down into Minnesota. The route home includes Iowa, Illinois, Kentucky, Tennessee, etc.

Cities on the list include (kind of in particular order): St. Augustine, Savannah, Charleston, D.C., Philly, Montreal, Winnipeg, Minneapolis, Tallahassee.

Got my cell phone, got my AAA card (leaving the AA card at home), got my spare belts and hoses, got my good luck voodoo charm, got enough Dylan CDs to bore the crap out of the kids, so I think I'm covered.

See you out on the tiles, Bob W. '87 Westy
