Insurance is regulated provincially in Canada so your Nova scotia rules will be different from those I'm under in Ontario. But, for point of reference here is what I did:

I had heard horror stories of people suffering a complete writeoff of their van and the insurance company giving them half of what they paid. So I had my van professionally apraised (apraisaer said Pokey was worth $7,500 Canadian) and then made sure my insurance company gave me a 19A rider. What that means is the insurance company is obliged to pay the appraised value of the vehilce.

I am debating getting the van apraised again, because I have added a SA grille, $500 custom aerodynamic luggage box, second battery, tach, 15" SA Rhein wheels w/Agilis 51s (alone $2,000 Canadian to replace). Plus I will probably add AC and a big brake kit fairly soon.

As a side note I had difficulty getting insured with CIBC (now Certas) because they consider a westy to be an RV. Moreover, discount insurers are unlikely to give you a 19A rider. I eventually went with State Farm who coincidentally also insure my house.

Thanks, Chris
