Thanks for the info on this issue. I will follow your advice and split my vanagon mailboxes into reasonable sizes and then search them all when needed.

William, I used to use digest mode to get the list until a list member recommended the concept of getting individual messages and filtering them into a separate mailbox. The advantage is that it is much easier to ignore topics that are not of interest, and get all the messages together of a topic that is interesting. I often go several days before reading the mail that comes into the vanagon list, other than scanning it for urgent issues. So then I'm reading along: Oh, here is someone with some propane tank issues. I'm working on my propane tank system, so I'm interested in that. I click one of the messages, click the subject column header, and boing, they are all together for easy reading. The archive searching works pretty well now that Gerry is on the new box, but still is nowhere near as fast as searching local media. Folks also talk about taking the archived messages on the road on a laptop for troubleshooting when not connected.

Please note - During the past 17 years of operation, several gigabytes of Vanagon mail messages have been archived. Searching the entire collection will take up to five minutes to complete. Please be patient!
