I installed 3M's version of the clear plastic film on my H4 headlamps a couple of years ago. This was upon the advice of a couple of people in the used parts trade who had high praise for the protective film (no vested interest here, they don't sell the stuff). So far, the film hasn't yellowed or affected the light output from the headlamps. Since installing the protective film, the H4 headlamps haven't been broken or cracked, but then again...I've never broken a unprotected headlamp in about a hundred years of driving. It's kinda like life insurance, you feel better if you've got it.
