It only opens 2-3 feet when it blows open, because the air trying to get underneath and rip it off encounters the canvas instead which pulls it back down. Since this is a gradual thing there's no shock load. It does get your attention though, unlike what happens if you drive away with it raised. That's not really noticeable if you're not trying to drive fast and don't go under low bridges... david
