Hi Folks,

Well, I drained a full gallon of old tranny oil out of the '89 Westy yesterday and rigged up an IV drip using a water-bottle and some plastic tubing. Zip-stripped the bottle to a milk crate, put the milk-crate on top of another one and set the whole mess on top of a pail so that the bottle was just above the RR fender. Not pretty, or fast, but didn't spill a drop. :)

In the archives I read (http://gerry.vanagon.com/cgi-bin/wa.exe?A2=ind0107D&L=vanagon&P=R14243) that Bentley says the transmission holds 3.2 quarts. I put 3.2 in and verified that the level is 15mm below the bottom edge of the fill hole. ***Is this right?*** I haven’t sprung for a Bentley yet.

Daisy shifts like butter now, but I'm thinking that the improvement is more due to having 3.2 quarts instead of 4.0 quarts in the tranny rather than the type of oil...

Thanks all,

~Eric~ '89 Westy - Daisy Vancouver, BC

Thanks everyone for your advice. The archives are a bit ambiguous on this topic, but today's vote was overwhelmingly for MT-90. Picked some up tonight; pricey stuff ($15CDN per quart). Now I just have to find a 17mm hex.

In theory, The MT-90 is used for Hypoid style diferentials (axles at 90degrees from trans input shaft) and the MTL is for Jetta style tranny's with axles and input/crank all turning the same way...maybe not the best description, but I hope you get the idea. Use MT90 for the vanagon Daryl of AA Transaxle Duvall, WA. Theres lots of debate in the archives over Redline MTL (75w80) vs. MT-90 (75w90) in the Vanagon, but nothing that has really helped me decide between the two. I live in Vancouver, BC where winter lows are around 32F and summer highs are rarely exceed 80F. I'm having some trouble shifting into 2nd when the trans in cold, so I thought I would try some Redline. Any suggestions on what would work best for me???

Thanks,

~Eric~
