Further to the current thread about yakima bike carriers: I recently built a bike carrier for a list member which will carry up to 4 bikes on the rear hatch. It is basically a frame upon which you attach your own Yakima or Thule bike trays. Sort of simulates a bar type roof rack on the rear hatch of the Vanagon. The rack attaches to the door only, you can open the door with the rack attached. I would say that it is very secure and strong.
