Whew! Heart stopper is right! Glad to hear that worked out as it did. I've had that same "nightmare", but not the event. What I thought of doing is to use a short length of climbing rope or thick marine line, attachment points on the van and roof near the latch, using two carabiners so either or both ends can be removed and the thing stowed. If it blew open it would only open whatever length of the rope used.

Sure would suggest rechecking the adjustment on the roof latch.
