I've been driving my 83 Air Cooled Westy for seven years on standard Unleaded. I've been from sea level to 3900 feet and never needed anything more. If you're having troubles with the 87 octane fuel, change brands and then look for improper timing, bad coil/ wires or low fuel pressure.
