The last aircooled models were sold in the early months of '83, although 1982 was the last year of production for aircooled vans. If a van has only one front grill, it's gotta be an aircooled, and the aircooled vans also had round headlights. I think this was the same for european models, no aircooled vans after early 83. I'm almost positive the van you speak of is not in fact an 88.
