You have a rebuilt engine, from VW of Canada. The case is probably aligned bored and the exhaust valve guides are oversized. The crank may or may not have been cut. I have seen rods cut .010 with standard mains.

I've got a new (to me) '87 Westy of indeterminate history. While looking at the top of the engine today I noticed 2 yellow decals on the block that read as follows.

First: EXCHANGE PIECE REMISE A NEUF

Second: Volkswagon Canada Inc. Remanufacturing Remise a neuf Engine # 08796

I'm hoping the local VW dealership might have some info but they're closed until Monday. Can I infer from this that the engine was rebuilt by VW? Assuming the work was done by a VW shop, is there another way to find out it's history?

I'm not even sure the motor is original. Where can I find the VIN number on the engine?

Thanks, Darren.
