Subject: Remedy requested for Suspected "rich-running" 1.9
Content-Type: text/plain; charset=iso-8859-1

Hi Volks:

My neighbour was beside my van when I started it - and he commented on how incredibly rich the exhaust smelled.

The drivability, FWIW, is excellent. Starts great and runs great. When it's warm out, I just turn the key and it starts. When it's cold out, requires partial throttle to start.

On the digitool, it does seem that the O2 sensor is working well - at least, when the van is warmed up.

I have a new rotor, cap, fuel filter and spark-plug wires.

Questions:

1. Is the 1.9 always supposed to run very rich at start-up? ( I think it is, because the O2 isn't warmed up - so I can't see how the "richness of mixture" could be controlled at start-up)

2. If I replace my tempII sensor, will this reduce richness, and improve mpg? (currently quite poor)

3. Can a vaccuum leak cause richness and poor fuel economy? (remember I do have excellent drivability)

Thanks,

Marshall Ruskin 84 Westy
