Subject: Q's: Clutch Problems!!
Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1"

Hello from Atlanta Ga. One of my two '81 air cooled Vanagons is having clutch problems; specifically, occasional juddering in 1st or reverse. I compared the movement range of the slave cylinder on the clutch lever of the ailing '81 against that of the good '81, and the bad '81's clutch lever moves only one-half the distance of that of the good '81. Also, the clutch foot pedal in the bad '81 seems to have 2 inches of play before the clutch engages. The bad '81 has a 3 mo. old clutch and flywheel resurfacing job. These symptoms existed before the clutch job. I recently had the brake fluid/clutch fluid flushed/replaced and bled to see if this was the solution to my problem, to no avail. There is no leakage at either master or slave cylinder.

Questions: Is this a bad clutch master cylinder? A bad slave cylinder? Do you replace the master cylinder as per Bentley, or are there some improved techniques? Thank you, List!

Regards,

Michael and Christina Nichols 2--'81 air cooleds
