You aren't alone in this peeve.

The easiest way to convince folks of the absurdity of this misalignment is to take them to a parking lot, and place a car in the 15°-20° "blind spot" that is present on both the left and right of the car when the side view mirrors are mis-adjusted to view to the rear.

Then, move the side-view mirrors to view that blind spot, and watch their eyes light up.
