A lot easier to do the work you described with the engine out than in the van. Been there; done that.

Have a really tight (150lbs + x4) 2.1 with approx 90K, always used synthetic oil, ran great pre-conversion, been out approx 6 mons, no head leaks. Before I plant it in my 84 S/R Vanagon do I do a head gasket and valve re-seat job prior to install? or take my chances? Realize no real science here, just best guess.
