While driving across the trans-Canada highway through Saskatchewan last
week I was shocked by the horrible sound of metal on pavement at
100km/hr. In fear I quickly pulled over to the side completely
expecting to see the transmission or some other critical part laying on
the road but much to my surprise, it was the spare tire holder and tire.
Apparently the bolt that holds the tire holder to the underside of the
vehicle had worked itself out and the spring that hold the safety latch
proved no match for the weight of the tire and the bumpy ride of the
highway. I was able to fix the hold with a shiny new bolt, washer, and
lock nut. The tire wasn't damaged and the asphalt ground off some of
the surface rust that had accumulated on the tire holder. Now if I can
only get my heartbeat to settle down.

PS: I'd add checking that bold to your pre-trip check list. I can't
imagine what would have happened if that holder had caught the lip of a
pot-hole but I'm not sure I'd be around to tell about it.

I'm not sure about Vanagons, but this was sort of an issue with Bays.
The factory front mount setup was attached to a thin piece of sheet
metal with little support. There are testimonials in the www.type2.com
archives of the tire falling off while going down the interstate. There
were also safety concerns about what happens when you take a direct
impact on the nose of the bus. I would search the Type II archives for
more info before starting this project.

Hello list members,
I am wondering if anyone might possess information on
mounting the spare tire on a 1980 Vanagon on the front
of the bus instead of underneath. Please let me know
whereas it will most likely be a future project for
me.
Thanks all.
