There is no sensor.

The oxs light comes on after a certain number of revolutions of the speedometer/odometer cable. It indicates when you have traveled 30k miles, and a reminder that you O2 sensor typically craps out at 30,001 miles, or thereabouts, leading to crappy performance, gruesome mileage, and general mayhem. Subsequently, you come to the Vanagon list and cite a bunch of symptoms you are seeing on your van, only to be rebuked when folks find out you ignored your OXS lite. Yours may be loose, and thus the flicker/intermittency.

After replacing the $30 O2 sensor, follow the speedo cable from the left front wheel upwards toward the deck plate under your left foot(while driving). Find the little black box that the cable runs through. On that box, find the white button, and push it in deeply (2cm) until you hear a CLICK!

You're set for another 30k.

Hello all, I am sure that this has been covered, but...

The oxygen sensor light in the dash of my 85 water-cooled Vanagon keeps coming on for a while, then going off. Any common causes? Should I simply replace the sensor?

Thanks for any input, it is greatly appreciated.

-Herr Brandt.
