I recall reading on the list, that if you have the pulled Vanagon's engine running, said automatic transmission parts do get lubricated, and it's then OK to tow with all wheels on the ground.

For about 100 miles, I don't think this would be a problem.

However, unless someone else more knowledgable than I says this method is OK, please take this advice with a big grain of salt.

Virtually all the moving parts in the automatic transmission move when the van is rolled. The major exception is the oil pump and this is the problem. Most of the rotating parts are turning on bushings. These bushings get lubricated from by the main pump. No pump, no oil. I would suggest following the recommendations in the manual, ten starting the engine to lubricate the moving parts and going again. If you need to toe on a regular basis, than a lube pump can be added to provide the needed lubrication. For a one time tow, it may be better to have it towed to avoid the fines and liability if something happens.
