I don't think that is a true statement :-)

Mine has no oil leaks. No drips on the driveway, nothing. Of course it cost a lot of $$ and time to fix all the leaks, but there are none. Been clean for a years now.

The other side is I think the pushrod tubes blow oil at freeway speeds, but I think all vanagons can suffer from this malady, not just an air cooled.
