Chris, I was suffering from the same gas smell. It wasn't my gas cap, but rather the rubber seals that hold the check valves in the plastic evaporative canisters that reside in the front wheel wells. The easiest way to check this is stick your head in the front wells .... and sniff. Mine was worst on the driver side. I bought the new seals from the dealer (Charles Maund). Easy to install.
