John,
You read one hell of allot more into my response than I ever could
possibly imagine--
OK--here's the absoulute best you can do for you Van as far as tire's---
Michelin's, Agillis---if you have lots of cash--
Yokohama's 356 D"s for a good tire at a resonable price.
Now try and find these at a local DC dealer--at a good figure---
The Tire Rack is an excellent source for tire's---
Excellent customer service, as well as satisfaction---to go along with
their fair price's.
And I drove to their South Bend Ind. facility, for the best service
ever--bar none, for the tire's on my BMW--
Discount Tire is two blocks from my home, and they also gave good
service at a fair price, on the Yokohama's on my Westy---
And they matched Tire Racks price.
Obviously you were looking for a deal on some Bridgestone's or a close
equivilant, or you wouldn't have been sniffing---
If this be the case, and you want to be dealing local, pick up a local
phone book, and call a local tire dealer, to find that local deal---
OK that's all on this worn out thread---
Another one to stack up in the archive's---
In response to a smart assed reply---

Hmmm, ask a friendly question, get a few smart-ass responses. I guess
that's what I've learned to expect from the Vanagon list.
But come on! Have you searched through the years of archives on the
subject of tires recently? Yes, tons of talk indeed, but not a whole lot
of substantial material. I love it when someone says "Check The
Archives!", as many times it's from someone who's a more experienced
Vanagonite that just can't be bothered by lesser knowledgeable people. I
suppose that's the answer to your question on why people keep on
bringing it up... becuase correct Vanagon tires can be a very confusing
thing, and there are no significant answers in the archive. You can
spend weeks searching throught the archives (which I have) and not come
to any sort of conclusion.
SO, I think what I'm doing is volunteering to compile a more
comprehensive list of tire information to add to what's already on the
tire page of the www.vanagon.com website. If there's some sort of
consensus, I can compile something in the next few weeks for those
people who don't want to irritate the easily annoyed folks on the list.
If anyone has anything to add, please e-mail me privately.
Thanks,
John

P.S. Thanks to those who responded with thoughtful information to my
stupid question.
P.P.S. for those who care, I like to support my local and/or
family/independent owned auto supply retailers.

You gotta be kidding me----
Tire Rack, and Discount Tire have the best deals known to man on
hoops---
If you wanta pay more for less----go to Sears, or Sams Club----
I just want to know--why this tire conversation keeps coming up-----
How many different ways can tires be talked about--?
The archives must really be loaded with ths stuff---
Along with how to avoid Canada---and the waste of time metric
system--and last but not the least the most worn out subject on the
list--------Vanagon.com sticker's---

After 5+ years and 80,000+ miles, my 'ol Bridgestone 603v's have finally
worn (almost) bald. Great tires indeed. I hate looking for Vanagon
tires, as no matter what shop or what tire you are searching for, they
say they can't get them, or they are discontinued! Anybody in the DC
area have a local, reasonably priced, and reliable source for tires? I'd
rather not purchase them from tirerack.com.
Or, if anyone has the ref #'s for the Bridgestone 603v 185R14 load D,
that would be a big help too.
Thanks,
John
