Here's my 2 cents on this. While changing the spark on these vehicles doesn't do much, it does some. But I think the spark plug isn't where people should first change. The plug is the end of the line for the spark, where does it come from, the coil, so upgrade the coil, either a higher power coil or give it a booster pack coil. The spark has to go through the wires also, so good wires also help. I went to Nology (www.nology.com) and had them do a setup for my van. They recommended a coil booster, Power Core (TM), and a set of there Hot Wires (TM), custom fit and then some Beru Silverstone S7 spark plugs. With this setup, I did notice better power all around, smoother idle, better pickup too. The plugs aren't cheap, $7-8 bucks a pop due to the silver electrodes, the electrodes are bigger and the electrode extends further out from the sleeve, the cermaic sleeve is larger too. Those things never fouled on me ever, just needed some regapping every now and then. If you want power go for this setup. For life, eh, platinum is great for life, but for spark strength it's not as good. Joe -----Original Message----- From: Vanagon Mailing List [mailto:vanagon@gerry.vanagon.com]On Behalf Of G. No real irrefutable benefit. Looks cool though. Similar to air-cooled airplane motors.
I used to use them, but couldn't see any mileage/performance increase (same with the Bosch Platinum's) so I use the regular-Joe Bosch plugs and pocket the coin.
