Hmmm, ask a friendly question, get a few smart-ass responses. I guess that's what I've learned to expect from the Vanagon list. But come on! Have you searched through the years of archives on the subject of tires recently? Yes, tons of talk indeed, but not a whole lot of substantial material. I love it when someone says "Check The Archives!", as many times it's from someone who's a more experienced Vanagonite that just can't be bothered by lesser knowledgeable people. I suppose that's the answer to your question on why people keep on bringing it up... becuase correct Vanagon tires can be a very confusing thing, and there are no significant answers in the archive. You can spend weeks searching throught the archives (which I have) and not come to any sort of conclusion. SO, I think what I'm doing is volunteering to compile a more comprehensive list of tire information to add to what's already on the tire page of the www.vanagon.com website. If there's some sort of consensus, I can compile something in the next few weeks for those people who don't want to irritate the easily annoyed folks on the list. If anyone has anything to add, please e-mail me privately. Thanks, John 83.5 Westy P.S. Thanks to those who responded with thoughtful information to my stupid question. P.P.S. for those who care, I like to support my local and/or family/independent owned auto supply retailers.

E-mail message From John Smith Subject: looking for new tires in DC area After 5+ years and 80,000+ miles, my 'ol Bridgestone 603v's have finally worn (almost) bald. Great tires indeed. I hate looking for Vanagon tires, as no matter what shop or what tire you are searching for, they say they can't get them, or they are discontinued! Anybody in the DC area have a local, reasonably priced, and reliable source for tires? I'd rather not purchase them from tirerack.com. Or, if anyone has the ref #'s for the Bridgestone 603v 185R14 load D, that would be a big help too.
