That panel hatch is kind of a bother. I went through some hassles, myself,
and bought some expensive fasteners that took about 6 months to arrive from
BD. They don't work afterall. Big bummer! I wish that I had listened to a
post a while back. (probably archived at vanagon.com). Someone had the
bright idea to buy an american fastener (Chrysler?) and drill the holes
larger. This would have saved lots of time and money. I will probably go
this route eventually, myself.
There are some positives to removing the hatch panel. I did the nifty little
modification that allows opening the hatch from the inside. I believe that
this idea came from Gary Lee. See

I also sound-deadened the panel, but I can't really tell a difference.
