There should be three round shims at the back of your crankshaft, the flywheel squeezes down on these three shims but they still allow from .007 - .015 or so crankshaft end play. If you haven't disturbed them they should be set up right by the last person that set them up. If they are set up wrong: #1.)Loose, it will cause your rod bearings, cam drive gear to bind and wear out quickly, it also binds the rods at the wrist pins and can cause piston failures, cylinder cracking and many other sure death problems. #2.) Too tight and it binds the engine making it hard to start and you have the potential of them locking or welding to your rear main bearing. If you need more detailed information P-mail me. If you're just resurfacing the flywheel you don't need to even consider these shims if you leave them undisturbed. I'd recommend that since you're in there you do the following things. a) New front main seal. $12.00 b) New starter pilot bushing in the bell housing. $1.20 c) Inspect the throw out bearing actuator linkage for cracks or abnormal wear. d) Install new main shaft bearing in the crankshaft end. $6.00 e) Install new flywheel O ring $1.20 f) Install new flywheel felt seal $ 0.80 g) Do your very best not to hang the tranny main shaft in the clutch disk, try for a very straight slide into position. If you bang hard against the splines in the disk or let the tranny hang heavy on the disk it can cause the clutch to chatter, hang up and not fully release.
