Reading the thread about the 46 mm rear axle nut...

I bought a tool for the rear axle nut. The tool is a flat chunk of steel, about 5/8 inch thick. One end has a hex hole cut to fit the 46 mm nut. The other end has a square hole for a 1/2" drive. That end also has big shoulders around the end. You place the tool on the nut, put pressure on the bar, and strike the shoulder of the tool with a hand sledge. Sort of a "poor man's" impact wrench. Wheels must be on the ground, and parking brake set hard. The nut comes of EASILY with the tool. No heat required. I mark the nut and cotter pin locations before starting...

I bought the tool in 1994 from the Parts Place, Inc. in Auburn Hills, Michigan. Their service was horrible at the time - maybe it has improved now. Their website is http://www.partsplaceforallvws.com/, good only for contact info and a catalog request.
