I hate cutting factory wires so this is what I did.

I took an old tail light harness from a dead Vanagon and cut the plug off of it that goes into the rear of the light. I cut it so there was about 15 cm of wire coming from the connector. I then crimped some mail spade connectors to the end of the 15cm wire coming from this plug with some additional wires 'Y'ing out from this that goes to a solid state device that take the signal and brake connections and merges them for our dumb style of trailer lighting. These spade connectors plug into the original factory plug that used to plug into the back of the tail light. I used some silicon to make it water tight and then some hockey tape to make it a fairly solid connection. Works well for at least the last four years in my Syncro DoKa.

have a utility trailer about to show up and was wondering how you go about hooking up a lighting harness for it. do you have to splice into the tail lights and turn signals or is it a simple plug in? thanks for any info...
