I went out and cleared out the space under the passenger seat. There was nothing completely blocking the air vent, but my K&N filter cleaning kit was kind of in front of the opening.

I tried the BA& out, with the levers in a variety of positions and it was working OK with no smoke. I did not try it while driving (which is when I had my original problem) but at the moment it looks like the partially obstructed air intake under the seat was the culprit. The heater is now working fine again. Does this make sense?

Thanks, Chris
