Most VW alternators, that I've seen, have a label that lists its out put. My 84 Westy is rated at 90 A and it bench tested at 120 A. I think that 30 A is the smallest alt, you might want a heavier gauge.

Unless you get an inductive ammeter, you'll need some hefty wire to go from the alt to the dash.
