VW minimum spec for a 90 amp alternator is 90 minus 16 or 74 amps hot.

Depends what you're using it for, but basic answer is no. Are you measuring total alternator output, or net charge/discharge at battery, or total accessory current? The first value will be highest, generally.

Also, you should use a shunt-type ammeter -- otherwise you'll want to be running 4-ga wire up to the ammeter and back.
