Wow, William, you've certainly had a different experience in Canada with
your VW's than I have, not that I'm complaining.  I've taken both my '85
Vanagon and '75 Westy to Canada on several trips up Vancouver Island and
over to Calgary.  Never had any probs with the authorities.  Perhaps I
"innoculated" myself by obtaining the proper Canadian insurance certificate
from my US insurance co. ahead of time. I also had the local cops use my
Westy as a training tool for their drug dog before I ever took it to
Canada - didn't want anyone's old stash ruining my day.

I've crossed out of the way border crossings in the dead of the night, found
myself in the wrong parts of town, and generally done most of the stupid
things that get tourists pulled over, but have yet to be stopped by Canadian
law enforcement.  I even spent six hours stranded on the side of the
Trans-Canada Highway outside Calgary without seeing a single police officer.
