I have one of these made by Coleman. It is about 10 years old. Work great as long as the friction clutch on the swivel is properly adjusted. It must be loose enough to allow the wheel to turn but tight enough to keep it from oscillating after hitting a bump. The mounting does attach to a hitch and has side pieces to keep the bracket from swiveling. It can hold 400 pounds of stuff. It does get a registration and you will get charged for it on toll roads. They are no longer being made. Dennis

It was much like one of those common hitch-platforms, but had these differences: 1. It was directly attached to the rear of the van by two pivots, so it like was "mounted with a hinge" to the van; 2. The platform was supported by a large single trailer wheel (under the platform - about in the middle) - and it worked exactly like a spring-loaded, shock-dampened caster wheel! The neat thing about it was that as you drove the van, turned, backed up - etc - the caster wheel would rotate and roll in the correct direction. Since it was not a trailer (no hitch - direct mount) it also did not require a license. I don't know it's capacity, but it looked like it could handle a few hundred pounds - easily. Does anybody know more about it - and especially - where it could be purchased? Thanks, Marshall Ruskin 84 Westy |
