Mike, I think you have triggered off one very good discussion here with your Aluminum/Threads query. <SNIP>
John - Rather than fight with it, I talked to my mechanic, and he's going to get it in the shop on Wednesday to see if he can just chase the threads or has to put a Time-Sert in the hole. He kindly pointed out to me that if I had been thinking I would have used some penetrating oil as soon as I knew it was coming out tight, and might have avoided damaging the threads. I knew that you had to be careful screwing into aluminum, to avoid cross-threading, etc., but never thought about damage coming out. So, I learned a lesson. Hope it isn't too expensive! The really annoying part is that I wanted to spend the weekend trying to track down the intermittant loss of power, backfire, won't run problem, so I can get down to Maryhill for the Wet Westies campout on the 7th. Somehow, running it on three cylinders didn't seem like a practical method of dealing with that. Tuesday night should be interesting enough. I'm only about a block from the mechanic's, but I have to get out of the driveway and around the stop sign first, so I guess I'll be noisy for a few minutes! Maybe this time I'll just put in Bosch Platinum plugs, and leave them there until the rust wins!
