Ya know, Terry, you may have a point.
I bought my '88 for 800 bux, with the engine (mostly assembled) on top of
the rear deck. I had to hang the water pump, exhaust, etc. on it (my labor
is free on my own projects). It needed a fair amount of cleaning. After I
installed the engine, it started blowing hoses. Turned out that DPO had
screwed up the head install and there was an exhaust leak into the coolant.
That cost about $300 to fix. It needed feet all around - about $300 there,
too. It needed wiper blades and a few other minor fixes to the tune of
another $100 or so.
Before I installed the engine, I installed the main oil seal that came with
the gasket kit that came with the van; this started leaking immediately. I
had to pull the tranny to replace the seal ($7.00). Incidentally, I used
the 12mm seal the second time, and haven't lost a drop since.
I suppose I'm up pretty close to my purchase price, and it hasn't quite been
a year on this one yet. Gotta figure out where to spend the last $60 or
so - maybe seat covers? (doesn't need them, but Steph though sheepskin
covers would be nice)

I gave the guy $5900.00 for the van, and after tires,KYB shocks, air
lifts, front rotor's, bearing , pads, rear drums, shoes, all new 50 watt
bulbs for the tail lights, winsheild, wiper blades , arms, radio,
speaker's,rear hatch struts, antenna, propane tank valves, complete tune
up stuff, K&N air filter, fuel filter, replacement sky light, rear
bumper and ends, one front bumper end, console, water faucet, gove box

So the BS figure I gave this guy is close----
Yep---I'm the grim reaper alright---

Ole Stanley professes, that what ever you spend on a Vanagon, plan
spending again on it, what you spent on it to make it right----
I think he is pretty close to being correct---

Sounds like a nice Westy---
Now be ready to spend whatever you paid for it on repair's, prior to it
being the way that you want it to be----
