Stan, As you know I have one together with a remote oil filter setup, but my installation is more of the water-cooled inline 4 variety! For some air-cooled comment though, in my pre-Vanagon days, I mounted a huge oil cooler (aircraft surplus) (18 inches x 16 inches by 1.75 inches) on the underside of my '72 Safare hightop camper. I plumbed it between the frame rails (not the center section) and made a pair of aluminum scoops mounted on the top and bottom of the cooler. The cooler was mounted parallel to the floor with the top scoop outlet pointed to the rear, and the bottom scoop opening directed forward. I initially set it up for the AC VW engine (dropped top speed a bit with additional drag!). I then kept both it and the factory cooler on the Corvair 140 HP engine I put in to replace the VW. I wasn't monitoring oil temperatures well, but noted very significant CHT drops, and the oil lost its burnt aroma. Frank Grunthaner |
